Clinical study of Topical Minoxidil Therapy(3%) in Alopecia

Abstract
Minoxidil, a piperidinopyrimidine derivative, is a potent vasodilator effective in severe hypertension irrespective of the cause.
Hypertrichosis occurs in approximately 70% of patients taking oral minoxidil, usually within 2 months of the start of therapy.
Although this increased hair growth may be generalized, it most often occurs on the face and extremities.
We tried to, evaluate the therapeutic efficacy or 3% minoxidil solution on 40 patients. with male pattern alopecia or ailpecia areata.
Patients were treated with topical application of 3% minoxidil solution twice a day for 6 months.
The effect was assessed by the appearance or increase in number of vellus hairs or terminal hairs on bald areas.
1) The effect of the topical application of 3% minoxidil solution in patients with male pattern alopecia: by week 24, we found the effect in 8 of 10 patients(80%).
2) The effect of the topical application of 3% minoxidil solution in patients with alopecia areata: by week 24, we found the effect in 12 of 14 patients(85.7%)
3) The effect of the topical application of 3% minoxidil solution in patients with alopecia: by week 24, we found the effect in 20 of 24 patients(83.3%)
4) The degree of efficacy was related to the duration of the therapy.
5) The side effect observed in 40 patients with 3% minoxidil solution was local pruritus (2.5%)
From these results, it is suggested that topical minoxidil may be an effective and relatively safe therapeutic agent for male pattern baldness and alopecia areata.
